Many families across Loughborough, Shepshed, Quorn, Barrow, Sileby and Rothley were affected without warning.

Here’s the simple version of what happened, why so many companies disappeared, and how we help local homes avoid risky suppliers in the future.

🏡 What Loughborough & Charnwood Homeowners Need to Know

Since 2021, the UK energy market has gone through one of the biggest shake-ups in modern times.

Over 60 suppliers have collapsed, exited, sold up, or been absorbed by bigger companies.

That includes well-known names like Bulb, Avro, Green, People’s Energy, Utility Point, Igloo, and many more.

In total, more than 3.5 million households — around 12.5% of the entire UK market — were forced into a new supplier almost overnight.

To protect customers, Ofgem has appointed British Gas as the official Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR)

🔍 Why So Many Energy Companies Went Bust

Between 2021 and 2022, wholesale gas prices spiked to record highs.

Many smaller energy suppliers:

  • didn’t hedge their prices

  • sold tariffs too cheaply

  • had very small cash reserves

  • couldn’t handle the cost when prices shot up

When the pressure hit, one supplier failed… then another… then dozens more.

To protect customers, Ofgem stepped in and moved people to bigger suppliers through the Supplier of Last Resort system.

Your lights stayed on — but your tariff, billing, and pricing often changed.

📉 The Scale of the Collapse

Here’s the easy-to-understand picture:

  • 60+ suppliers have stopped supplying since 2021

  • 3.5 million+ homes were affected

  • This is 1 in every 8 homes in the UK

  • Some failures were huge (Bulb had ~1.7 million customers)

  • Many others had 50,000 to 300,000 customers

  • Dozens more had 1,000–10,000 customers each

It was the biggest shutdown of energy suppliers in UK history.

🛑 Why This Matters to Homeowners Today

Even if your lights stayed on, supplier collapses caused:

  • unexpected changes to tariffs

  • higher bills

  • confusion over credit balances

  • lost access to apps/portals

  • customer-service disruption

  • weeks of uncertainty

Many homeowners only discovered their supplier was gone after the email arrived.

This is why, today, stability matters more than chasing the cheapest online deal.
